An ECKist went to lunch with a friend. During lunch the man told the ECKist a funny joke about a fat couple he had happened to see sitting next to him in another restaurant. The ECKist went away from the lunch meeting thinking that it was a really funny story. And he filed it away to pass on later.

That evening, the ECKist was at a Chinese restaurant with a business associate. When they finished their meal, the waitress brought the check with two fortune cookies. Just as the ECKist started to break open his fortune cookie, a large couple came into the restaurant and were seated at the next booth. Someone sent me a poem. The title was “The Calf Path,” and one of the lines in it was “the calf-paths of the mind.” It tells an interesting story.

Three hundred years ago there was a little calf on its way home. It meandered as it made its way along a path that led through the forest, and as the calf wandered and made its trail, it disappeared into history. The next day, along came a dog. He was just out for a walk when he smelled these tracks, and he decided to follow the path of the calf. “The Jade Master” is a story in a book by Ed Seykota called The Trader’s Window. It’s about a young man who didn’t know what to do with his life.

He had heard about a man known as the jade master who lived about five miles away. One day the young man said to himself, Even though it’s winter, I’m going to visit the jade master and learn all about jade.

So he walks five miles through the snow and bitter cold. Finally he comes to the jade master’s house and knocks on the door. An old man with a broom in his hand opens it. “Yes? What can I do for you?”

The young man says, “I’ve come to learn about jade. Would you take me as your student?”
