No Coincidences, Only Connections

The day after returning from being the guest speaker at an Eckankar seminar in Trinidad and Tobago, I severed the ligament in my left index finger and a vein in my left hand. As a professional guitarist and music educator, I work with my hands every day. This injury was potentially career-ending.

My hand would not heal on its own. After consulting with an orthopedic surgeon, it became clear that I’d need surgery to ever have a chance of playing guitar again.

My life’s practice is to turn worry into wonder. Rather than worry about outcomes, I began to wonder how Spirit would offer Its lessons and blessings through these experiences. Read More

I’d like to mention here a few thoughts I’ve written about. One of the thoughts is: Every thought, word, or deed either purifies or pollutes the body. Now, this is very important, very powerful, because you’re dealing with states of consciousness.

At some point I got rid of all the negative songs I had in my collection. Even if there was only one negative song on a CD, I got rid of it. You have to understand, I listen to country music. And you know how country music is—they always throw in at least one tearjerker on a CD. So I cleared them all out; I gave them away. I figured they would be good for someone, because states of consciousness are different. And then I found myself listening more and more to classical music. This is the story of “Alita.” She’s the mom of Minnou, a cat she’s owned for ten years. I have to say, the only name that I haven’t changed in these stories is Minnou’s. I don’t think she’ll mind.

During the ten years that Minnou has lived in Alita’s home, the Spiritual Exercises of ECK have become very important for Minnou. This is the HU session with the Mahanta, the Inner Master.

I was to be the cleric for a local ECK Light and Sound Service and thought it best to get a haircut. My longtime barber had translated (passed on) unexpectedly. His shop partner, Cheryl, had cut my hair on occasion, so I switched to her.

When I sat down in her barber chair, Cheryl asked the usual question: “How do you want your hair cut?”

I replied, “Just a light trim” and then added, “I’ll be wearing a suit this weekend and want to look nice.”

Even as these words were coming out of my mouth, I wondered, Why am I saying this?
