A few years ago, my friend Jim passed away suddenly. He’d been a companion with whom I lived for many years. Like me, he was a longtime member of Eckankar. His passing left me feeling shocked, lonely, bereft—and unaccountably angry.
Over the next month or two, I kept thinking of things he did that really annoyed me. I shifted between anger and missing him terribly.
Then one morning I had a fantastic dream. I was walking down a white marble hall and sensed Jim coming up behind me. I felt his right arm wrap around my shoulders and gather me to him, my cheek against his chest. Without looking up, I sobbed, “I miss you so much!” I felt his kiss on the very top of my head, and he breathed two compassionate, loving words, “I know.” Read More

For several days I’d stewed over this weekend’s assignment: this article.
That’s seldom the case. For most assignments, ideas come to mind during the week, which I jot down, because these promptings are like vapor. They come easily, but they quickly vanish too.
So it was unusual for this article to so trouble me.
Here’s my challenge: how to differentiate my article from all the excellent stories around mine? How? A big question.

In ECK, there is the principle of the Inner and Outer Master. The Outer Master is myself as the spiritual leader of Eckankar. But there is also an inner part, which we call the Inner Master, who gives spiritual instruction to each person as he or she needs it.
In other words, each person is unique in how they look at life, because each person’s experiences have been totally unique. Even twins are unique in that there is a different being operating through each physical body.
As the Inner Master I am able to reach and teach many people at once. More importantly, I am able to talk to each person according to his spiritual needs. This is a part of the spiritual teaching of Eckankar which might differ from what many people are used to in their previous religion. Read More
